Kate, one of our Belize specialists, loves the less-visited southern district of Toledo where a clutch of small lodges provide a comfortable base from which you can explore cacao farms, coastal mangroves, tiny Caribbean atolls, dense tropical rainforest and the wildlife contained therein. The local Mayan site of Lubaantun was also where a controversial crystal skull was discovered in 1926.
One of John’s favourite spots is the sacred Mayan cave of Actun Tunichil Muknal (locally known as ATM). A two hour hike at dawn across Mennonite fields and fording rivers leads you to the cave entrance, which is only accessed by a short swim. A hike through subterranean watercourses before clambering through a series of chambers that are strewn with Mayan relics, will lead you to come face to face with the ‘occupant’ of the final cave.
Belize, formerly known as British Honduras, borders Mexico and Guatemala and is the only English speaking country in Central America. Despite being smaller than Belgium, the landscapes vary incredibly from mountainous forests and fertile hills to river wetlands and beautiful beaches. The hundreds of small Cayes and reefs along its Caribbean coast provide excellent diving opportunities and The Blue Hole, a large underwater sink hole, is undoubtedly one of Belize's most famous sub-aquatic attractions. From manatee spotting off the coast of Placencia to jaguar tracking in the Rio Bravo Reserve, the wildlife and birdlife is extremely varied and accessible.
Ancient Mayan ruins, enchanting landscapes, extraordinary wildlife and a unique mix of local people and culture make Belize a fascinating and exciting holiday destination. This is also a great country to participate in adventure activities such as tubing or kayaking through river-cut gorges in the heart of a tropical rainforest. Belize combines well with Guatemala or Mexico to create a holiday of exceptional variety.
