Trip Overview
This 8 day Arctic sailing voyage in and around West Greenland’s Disko Bay and the UNESCO World Heritage Jakobshavn Isfjord will search for the whales of the region, in particular the Arctic endemic species Bowhead also known as the Greenland Whale. Greenland is dominated by the second largest ice-sheet in the world; more than 80% of its surface area is covered by ice reaching a thickness of over 3000 metres (10,000 feet) in the interior. This ice sheet spills into the waters of Disko Bay with huge icebergs drifting off the front of the Jakobshavn Isfjord.
The Kronprinsens Ejland archipelago is a favourite haunt of whales and Disko Island teems with birdlife. Days will be spent exploring this area in search of Bowhead, Humpback and Minke whales, along with Narwhals. On Hunde Eijland there are old dwellings of Greenland’s Thule culture, dating back to the 11th Century. This is a great one week introduction to the wildlife and culture of Greenland.
