Steppes Travel has been specialising in expeditionary voyages to the Southern Ocean for over ten years. We offer a number of cruises to South Georgia and the Falkland Islands, often in combination with Antarctica, which must rank as one of the world’s great sea voyages. We also have a South Georgia only voyage, focused on spending extended time exploring this little visited island for wildlife enthusiasts and those who want to return for longer. Our specialists John and Sue, draw on their in-depth knowledge of this region, the voyage itineraries and the ships themselves, the majority of which they’ve either personally travelled on or inspected.
With its white sand beaches and windswept moors, The Falklands play host to an astonishing variety of wildlife. This is nature's kingdom where the husky cry of the sea lion, the quizzical gaze of the rockhopper penguin and the unfamiliar companionship of the striated caracara are a reminder of nature’s supremacy. Visit charming Port Stanley and enjoy the islander’s warm hospitality, while visiting the museum or one of the seven pubs.
South east from The Falkland’s and battered by the restless churning of the Southern Ocean, South Georgia is renowned for its magnificent scenery, rich history and boundless wildlife. Originally uninhabited, it was claimed by Captain Cook in 1775, first becoming an important source of seal skin and then the world’s largest whaling centre by the beginning of the twentieth century. However, for many it's best known for its part in Shackleton’s extraordinary rescue journey following the loss of the ship Endurance in 1916.
