Akademik Shokalskiy is an excellent small expedition ship and one of our favourites. Built in Finland in 1983, she is ice-strengthened and has stabilisers for more comfortable sea journeys. In 1998 she was fully refurbished for private client travel and is now capable of comfortably accommodating up to 54 passengers. One of the last of the former Russian small research vessels still in service, this class of vessel has a fine reputation for expedition cruising due to her strength, manoeuvrability and small number of cabins.
On board there is a cosy bar lounge and a dedicated lecture room/library stocked with a good collection of reference books and videos. Akademik Shokalskiy is not a luxury vessel, with accommodation being reasonably simple yet perfectly comfortable. All cabins have outside portholes or windows, and ample storage space, with the choice of triple & twin shared cabins with shared bathrooms or private twins with private facilities along with superior double cabins and a suite. The spacious bridge is always open to passengers and provides a great vantage point when sailing. The food is typically wholesome and uncomplicated and is served by efficient Russian stewardesses. A small fleet of onboard zodiac enable landings and exploratory cruising. There is a small infirmary with a ships Dr on call, ship to shore communications are available.
