The Akademik Ioffe and Akademik Sergey Vavilov were both Scandinavian built in Finland for the Russian Academy of Science in 1988-89. As the pride of the Russian scientific fleet, these ships boast state-of-the-art technology, with ice-strengthened hulls, making them exceptionally stable, manoeuvrable, fast and quiet.

Each vessel can accommodate a maximum of 110 guests and all cabins have exterior views with either shared, semi-private or private facilities. Public areas and amenities include a communal dining room with unreserved seating, a theater-style presentation room, a lounge and bar, open late afternoon and evening with a wide selection of wines and spirits, a library with a collection of polar-themed books, ship-to-shore communications via satellite, a clinic with a licensed doctor, a gym, sauna and swimming pool. The captain and crew, numbering 53, maintain the ship to the highest standards and keep them immaculately clean. The crew has many years of experience in Antarctica and are committed to ensuring a safe and memorable journey.
