Jackie Pearson has wonderful memories of Zanzibar when she visited it with her husband after a week’s safari in Northern Tanzania. She particularly loved her night in the traditional stone town with an evening out with the locals. Stone town is great for culture, with lots of little alleys to wander and the people are very friendly. She recommends the beaches on the east coast, North coast and the Mnemba island, that all offer an excellent beach experience.
Zanzibar is best combined with a migration safari in Kenya or Tanzania or Gorilla safari in Uganda or Rwanda at the beginning of your trip. With several international airlines that fly in and out of Zanzibar it is easy to connect with the surrounding countries.
Zanzibar is an archipelago made up of Zanzibar, Pemba islands and several islets. Located in the Indian Ocean, about 25 miles from the Tanzanian coast, and lying just south of the equator it has a great year round climate. The sensual beauty of the islands of Zanzibar has always been a well kept secret among the world's travellers, artists and discoverers.
Once the trading centre for the whole of East Africa, Zanzibar and its surrounding islands are part of a great coral reef stretching down Africa's Indian Ocean coast. For years, the names of its serene beach retreats and fascinating town houses were passed around between those in the know as the place to come for relaxation, inspiration and revival of the spirit.
Zanzibar Island, known locally as Unguja, is 60 miles long and 20 miles wide, it is characterised by beautiful sandy beaches with fringing coral reefs, making it a perfect romantic honeymoon destination. The magic of historic Stone Town which is said to be the only functioning ancient town in East Africa, a true African historical gem.
The best time to visit is during the dry months of June to October. November and December are great too, but have short rains, which are light and so should not hinder your beach experience.
