Tongabezi Main house Tongabezi House
  • Small owner run lodge with all trimmings
  • A variety of accommodation options from family to honeymoon
  • Discover Livingstone and Victoria Falls
  • Enjoy a river based activities

Tongabezi is located upstream from Victoria Falls, not far from the town of Livingstone. This lodge holds prime position on the Zambian banks of the river and is made up of a number of free standing houses and cottages, perfect for honeymooners and families alike.

The main reception of African textures and colours, is quite underutilized because each house and cottage has its own private concierge ensuring highly attentive service coupled with sincere Zambian hospitality. There is a lovely elevated lounge area, set on wooden decking, overlooking the river and shaded by an a-frame thatched roof. It is known as ‘the Boathouse” and it is the perfect setting for total relaxation and quiet interaction with fellow travelers.

The 5 private houses emphasize total exclusivity. The bedroom and sitting areas are entirely open to the river, creating a feeling of sleeping outdoors, covered only by the thatched roof. The king or twin beds are lavishly draped with mosquito netting, forming the only barrier to the great outdoors and the bathrooms feature huge open-air sunken baths. Romantic meals can be served on the private balconies overlooking the river.

The 6 River and Garden Cottages are not quite as open to the elements. They have king or twin bedded rooms and the en-suite bathrooms have Victorian baths placed at the large windows. There are ample indoor and outdoor areas for relaxing, dining and enjoying the ever changing river views. The quaint pool area is shaded by the riverine trees and enhanced by private lantern lit dining settings in the evenings.

Activities are varied and include a tour into Livingstone town to visit the historical museum, and other places of interest. Instead of having lunch at Tongabezi you may opt for a picnic lunch on one of the nearby islands accompanied by a guide. Or, depending on the time of year, you could have lunch on Livingstone Island followed by a dip in the Devil's Pool right on the edge of the falls. Water activities are by canoe or by motorised banana boat. You can also visit the Zimbabwean side of the falls for a different perspective.

At Steppes we love Tongabezi and its take on luxury with a definite African twist.
