You definitely should stay close enough to town to be able to engage in all the activities offered in the area. Especially exciting is visiting devils pool which can only be done from the Zambian side. You get the opportunity to swim at the very edge of the falls, combine this with a lunch there or sundowners and have the most magical falls experience.
A change of clothes is a must if you are visiting the falls in the months of April or May as the spray will drench you!
A little more about Livingstone
This small town on the edge of the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls has endless history and provenance. Recently it has gained in popularity as less people wanted to travel to Zimbabwe as the falls can be seen just as well from the Zambian side.
Livingstone offers a wonderful final stage to a safari in Botswana, Zambia or Zimbabwe sometimes offering an alternative to a seaside resort. Only a few lodges and camps have been built along the banks of the Upper Zambezi River, all of which are ideal for visits to the nearby Victoria Falls. For the intrepid, there is an opportunity to go white water rafting, canoeing or bungee jumping and you can take a Flight of Angels over the Falls by helicopter or micro-light.
Described by the Kololo tribe as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’, the Smoke that Thunders, or in more modern terms as ‘the greatest known curtain of falling water’, Victoria Falls are a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur on the Zambezi River, bordering Zambia and Zimbabwe. Many claim that the view of Victoria Falls is far more impressive from the Zambian side, with the added attraction of having far fewer tourists than the Zimbabwean side of this magical spot.
Columns of spray can be seen from miles away, 546 million cubic meters of water per minute plummet over the edge at the height of the flood season, over a width of nearly two kilometers into a deep gorge over 100 meters below. Facing the Falls is another sheer wall of basalt, rising to the same height and capped by mist-soaked rain forest. A path along the edge of the forest provides the visitor who is prepared to brave the tremendous spray with an unparalleled series of views of the Falls.
When to go
May to November, offers the best viewing of the falls with May possibly being wet. Most activities are available from June to November.
