Entebbe and Lake Victoria Holidays
Entebbe is a city in southern Uganda, located on the shores of Lake Victoria near the capital city of Kampala. Entebbe Airport is probably the friendliest in Africa, and operates as the main international airport for Uganda. Entebbe became a colonial centre in the 19th century, and was the capital until 1962. With its botanical gardens and colonial buildings, it is a charming sleepy place and good base for visits to some of the islands of Lake Victoria, most particularly Ngamba Island, and the source of the Nile. In reality the source includes a number of lakes and rivers in Uganda and Rwanda as well as the Virungas and Ruwenzori’s.
Lake Victoria is the biggest of all the African Lakes and it is also the second widest freshwater lake in the world. Its wide ranging exterior belongs to the three countries, the northern half to Uganda, the southern half to Tanzania, and part of the north eastern sector to Kenya.
Accomodation within Entebbe and the surrounding areas is quite wide-ranging, Gately on the Nile is situated adjacent Lake Victoria, close to the Source of the Nile, and offers panoramic views from the terraced garden area. In addition, Windsor Lake Victoria Hotel offers an Old colonial style hotel with a view over Lake Victoria. It has good facilities including a formal dining area with an outside terrace, 2 bars, breakfast room and pool with its own bar and restaurant area. Ngamba Island consists of approximately 100 acres of which 98 acres is forested and is part of the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust. Ngamba Island Tented Camp offers stylish accomodation in the natural surroundings of the park.
