Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Holidays

Uganda, Bwindi national park aerial view

Bwindi Impenetrable National Parkis located in south western Uganda, it is near to the geographical heart of Africa where the joining together of the Rift Valley and the Great Lakes have created an eco-system that characterise the very core of the African continent. Due to this, Bwindi is considered one of the most biologically diverse areas on Earth, which is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The Park itself is characterised by thick tropical rainforest, often shrouded in mist, and provides a perfect habitat for the last remaining fascinating primates, the Mountain Gorillas. Over half the world's population of mountain gorillas live in Bwindi and three families, Mubare, Habinyanja and Rushegura have been habituated to human presence. For many, sitting with the awe inspiring gorillas for a just a moment remains a true highlight and memory of an African trip.

Looking deep into the expressive brown eyes of these gentle giants is one of the most exciting and poignant wildlife encounters that Africa has to offer, but do not let it distract from Bwindi's broader biodiversity and magnificent surroundings. The national park has over 90 species of mammal, including 11 primates, of which the black-and-white colobus, with its lovely flowing white tail, is prominent. The forest birding ranks with the best in Uganda, with 23 highly localised Albertine Rift endemics present.

Accomodation within the park is very limited to maintain the magnificent feeling of complete isolation in magical surroundings. Buhoma Lodge commands spectacular and uninterrupted views of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park home to the rare and elusive Mountain Gorilla.  With the best views in Bwindi, the Bwindi tented camp overlooks the primeval Bwindi Forest with monkeys, gorillas, chimpanzees and birds screeching near the stream below. Lastly, the newest and most upmarket of the camps at Bwindi Gorilla Forest camp is situated on a hillside with views towards the forest where the mountain gorillas reside.
