The Nubian and Bayuda Desert Holidays
Whilst we wait for the incredible diversity of culture and wildlife in South Sudan to become safe to visit, we direct our attentions to the provinces north of Khartoum, along the Nile River as it snakes its way toward Egypt. Here in the kingdom of Kush you will find remnants of Egyptian influence over the tombs and pyramids built to honour the dead kings. The 13 Temples and 3 palaces at the foot of Jebel Barkel sacred mountain has earned it UNESCO heritage status, an endless playground for all who are interested in archaeology. This area north of Khartoum is inhabited by historically nomadic people of the Islamic faith. The white Bayuda desert is found within the loop of the Nile and is comprised of great flat plains dotted by arid grassland, ancient whadis and volcanic outcrops and mountains. The Nubian desert is more Saharan in appearance with large golden sickle shaped dunes, low acacia scrubland and plains that look black from afar due to small dark pebbles on the surface.
