Tswalu is the ancestral home to the san bushmen and on the 1000 square kilometer reserve you will find ancient art, many unusual desert adapted animals and only thirty other guests.

The thornveld and sweeping red dunes that characterise the Kalahari are home to some of the planets rarest animals. Tswalu is a relaxed and peaceful place where you can unwind at the spa, interact with wild meercats, track elusive black rhino, aardvark and pangolin. Viewing the vast expanse on horseback or from your private sleep-out deck is a treat and experiencing the community projects set up by the Oppenheimer family emphasizes the true importance of community interaction.

There are two distinct accommodation options on the reserve.

The Motse is the main lodge comprising of just eight rooms, two of which are designed to accommodate families with two bedrooms. The camp will never accept more than twenty people at a time, and therefore offers an exclusive experience. The rooms are large and sumptuous and built of local materials, with large windows and doors to encourage the outdoors in. The main house of Motse is an impressive open plan space with an enormous entrance and high roof offering a library in the mezanene secton and overlooking an infinity pool and the red dunes in the distance.

Tarkuni is the Oppenheimers private home and can be your private hideaway if they are not there. Five extensive bedrooms accommodate ten guests, complete with a pool and wonderful outdoor space.

Tswalu has been one of Illona’s favourite lodges ever since she first visited in 1997 and subsequently worked there as a ranger. It’s a place that she feels everyone should experience in a lifetime and cannot recommend it more highly. It is a place of calm and discovery.
