Thonga Beach Lodge
Mabibi, on the Elephant Coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal. Transfers take you to a point (there is also a place to park your car should you have car hire) and a 4x4 takes over as you journey 45 minutes on a slightly bumpy sandy road down to the lodge. This all adds to the feeling of wonderful seclusion, you will find the beaches here to yourself.
Why we like it
It’s our favourite location on the Kwa-Zulu Natal coastline. The lodge is set in a coastal dune forest with a kick your shoes off kind of feel. Communal areas are spacious and comfortable, inspired by Thongan architecture. There are swimming pools (one of which is used for Scuba training), and a lovely spa to enjoy. Food here is worth a special mention!
Room types differ, some with views of the forest (these can also accommodate families) and some with magnificent sea views. The deluxe suites have the added bonus of their own private plunge pool.
Activities are plenty, should you get bored of lazing on the endless beach. Enjoy off-shore scuba diving (PADI), guided canoe trips on Lake Sibaya, boat cruises, turtle tracking (seasonal), snorkelling, bird watching, wilderness walks, cultural experiences and fishing.
