Royal Malewane

Royal Malewane deck
  • Unparalleled opulence
  • Refined dining in the bush
  • Exceptional service

Owned by Liz Biden of Birkenhead House and La Residence fame, this is one of the original properties in The Royal Portfolio Collection. Colonial sumptuousness best describes the richly classical approach in the lodge with deep red Persian rugs throughout the rooms and public areas, and crystal and silverware characteristic of the experience.

The clever lay-out of the suites gives an air of seclusion to the private pools and sala, with typical Liz Biden touches throughout: towering four poster beds and travertine bathrooms with casually strewn chaises-longues.

The two bedroomed Royal and Malewane Suites are more than an additional bedroom, and are sizeable self contained options, ideal for families. The 6 bedroomed Africa House is set apart from the lodge and is for exclusive use. Designed as the Biden’s private bush house, Africa House is more in the Birkenhead mould with an oversized approach to colour and proportions – and a richly coloured collection of African art. Special mention must be made of the award winning spa, which boasts a 25 metre lap pool and gym, and provides a central Zen chill spot throughout the day.

Tempting to say that it is the completely flexible approach to meal structure – eat when and where you want – which sets this apart from other schedule-orientated lodges, but it is in fact the quality of both the rangers and trackers, who are acknowledged to be among the best in Africa. And this is borne out by the incredible sightings, including leopard, cheetah and black rhino at very close quarters.

A stay here can be combined with properties such as the Cape Grace and Ellerman House - and to make use of a discounted long stay rate, other Portfolio properties such as Birkenhead House and La Residence.

The property would suit those looking for honeymoon bliss; but the elegant colonial approach has appeal across all age groups. The Royal and Malewane Suites, and Africa House are good family options on an exclusive basis.

It would be a shame to spend less than three nights, such is the inner calm induced by the nothing-is-too-much-trouble staff, the flexible approach to dining, the flop and stay spa and the calmly professional demeanour of the rangers. Not to mention the often visited waterhole in front of the lodge, making game viewing with a Chardonnay in hand a daily possibility!
