Amakhala Game Reserve

makhlala game reserve Amakhala
  • A wide variety of choice
  • Small owner run lodges
  • Malaria free part of the greater Addo National Park

Various small lodges are located in the Amakhala Game Reserve on the Bushman’s River in the Greater Addo National Park of the Eastern Cape. This 7000 hectare reserve is a heartwarming story of generations of sheep and cattle farmers embarking on a conservation initiative to re-introduce the natural fauna and flora back to this area. Today the Reserve prides itself as an ideal environment for a malaria-free bush experience with excellent “Big Five” game viewing. Enjoy the shear tranquility of the region or explore the nearby 1820 Settler town of Grahamstown with its cultural and educational heritage.

Hlosi Game Lodge - This family friendly lodge is set on a tranquil hillside, overlooking a wide river plain and undulating grasslands. The 4 luxury air conditioned suites are designed in the spirit of a bygone era. Two of the suites have two bedrooms, which are ideal for families. The spacious lounges are warmed by cosy fireplaces, complementary sherry and a selection of classic reads, all opening out to a private viewing deck.

Bukela Game Lodge - The lodge is set in a position which overlooks a picturesque oxbow river plain. The large wooden pool deck allows guests to relax with a cocktail and view a small dam frequented by game. The outdoor boma is just one of the variety of dining options on offer. The 4 twin or king bedded suites are styled in African simplicity; they are private retreats, separated from the main lodge by wooden walkways and indigenous bush. Your stay at Bukela Game Lodge includes all meals as well as two safari activities and walks daily.

Reed Valley Inn - The Inn is a typical colonial farm house with 3 historic en-suite country rooms, which once provided rest and safety for the travellers on the mail wagon. Relax in the hospitable lounge and reading room, share stories in the classic wooden pub, or laze around the inviting swimming pool. Join the guests at the nearby Bush Lodge for game drives and for sumptuous farm style meals.

Other lodges in the reserve include Amakhala Bush Lodge, Woodbury Lodge and Woodbury tented camp, Amakhala safari Lodge, Leeuwenbosch, Quartermain’s and Hillsnek Camp all of which can be included in your taiormade holiday to South Africa.

Enjoy river cruises, canoe safaris, guided walks, game drives and visit the nearby Born Free Foundation which is actively involved in saving lives, stopping suffering and keep wildlife in the wild.
