Mandy has been working for Steppes for around five years and has a passion for the conservation of wildlife. She considers seeing a magnificent silverback gorilla in the misty Virunga mountains as one of her ultimate wildlife experiences and was struck by the beauty of Rwanda and its people.

Rwanda is located in the Great Lakes region of east central Africa. A verdant country of fertile and hilly terrain, often called the ‘land of a thousand hills’, Rwanda offers vivacious wildlife sighting opportunities including the legendary Mountain gorilla, along with vast towering mountains and impressive nature rich National Parks. Rwanda is a truly spectacular, wildlife-rich holiday destination.

Parc National des Volcans in the Virunga volcanoes is home to the magnificent Mountain Gorillas to which Dian Fossey dedicated her life. The epic Nyungwe Forest, one of the largest montane forests in Central Africa, is renowned for its large troops of colobus monkeys and rich variety of orchids. Akagera National Park is a savannah park with elephant, hippo and crocodile. Lake Kivu is a beautiful inland sea enclosed by steep terraced hillsides.

The pivotal attraction for travellers to Rwanda is an encounter with the enigmatic and mightiest of the primate species, the mountain gorilla. The best opportunity to track mountain gorillas is in Parc National des Volcans. Other primates in the country include the slightly overlooked endangered golden monkeys: although not as awe inspiring as the Mountain gorillas these fascinating primates offer a unique contrast to the lifestyle of their gorilla relatives. Rwanda is a photographer’s paradise waiting to be explored.
