Located in the Great Lakes region of east central Africa, Rwanda is a verdant country of fertile hills and dramatic volcanoes dotted with colourful local villages. Often called the ‘land of a thousand hills’, it offers some of Africa’s most inspiring wildlife experiences, against a backdrop of fertile hills, dramatic mist shrouded volcanoes and colourful village communities.
For many, the country is synonymous with enigmatic mountain gorilla, found in the Volcanoes National Park in the Virunga volcanoes chain, where Dian Fossey dedicated her life to the study of these fascinating creatures and where you can still visit the remains of her research station and her final resting place. The park is also home to the endemic golden monkeys and the chance to follow these lively troops through the forest is for many, an unexpected treat.
Wildlife elsewhere includes the epic Nyungwe Forest in the south, one of the largest montane forests in Central Africa, renowned for its large troops of colobus monkeys and rich birding in addition to the troops of chimpanzees found here. In the east, the savannah of Akagera National Park is reminiscent of the open plains of East Africa, home to elephant, hippo and crocodile, but for those just looking to unwind after the rigours of trekking, Lake Kivu is a beautiful inland sea enclosed by steep terraced hillsides and sandy beaches.
It is impossible not to be struck by the beauty of Rwanda and its people and with a handful of luxury wildlife lodges and boutique hotels now opening up, as well as a thrilling 4 day helicopter safari to Virunga, Rwanda is just waiting to be explored.
