Swakopmund Holidays
Swakopmund is the main holiday resort in Namibia, it offers a perfect getaway destination in the western coastal area of Namibia. During the summer holidays and long weekends thousands of Namibians flock to the coast. This migration happens for a couple of reasons, Swakopmund has a real holiday feel and everyone wants to be there, and during the December holidays the cool Namibian coast offers relief from the intense heat of the interior.
The architecture and general feeling of Swakopmund is one which may be associated with a small German village, the town seems to be stuck in time. Although in recent times new generations of Swakopmunders have woken up to the tourist potential of the area the city still manages to create a feeling of timelessness.
True to its German traditions early mornings and evenings in Swakopmund can be cold throughout the year, as the cold Atlantic Ocean meeting the Namib Desert creates a fog bank. This coolness is often a relief from the heat of the rest of Namibia, a can provide a perfect place for recuperation.
There is a small variety of accomodations located within this region of Namibia, most of which are located close to the stunning sandy beaches Swakopmund has to offer. Beach Lodge is positioned directly on the beach in Swakopmund, with a view of the sea from each room. The Stiltz Lodge offers the most spectacular views in Swakopmund overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the river-bed, the sand dunes and the bird rich lagoon at the river mouth. The quaint and charming resort town of Swakopmund was built during German Colonial period. With the desert on one side and the sea on the other there are parts of the town that resemble a Bavarian village. The four-star luxury Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre offers a very different style of accomodation to the others however it is a great base from the activity orientated traveller.
