Mandy has travelled extensively in mainland Madagascar and some of her highlights include finding a tomato frog in Maroantsetra, searching for aye-aye on Nosy Mangabe and seeing and hearing the magnificent indri in Andasibe. Ever since her first visit in 2008, Mandy has been captivated by this charming and unique destination.
Madagascar is an island that separated from the African coastline about 135 million years ago. The fourth largest island in the world, over 80% of the wildlife is unique to the island and it is widely considered one of the world's top conservation priorities.
The variety of flora and fauna is such that, to some, wild Madagascar is known as the eighth continent. The island boasts dense, tropical rainforests, which are the perfect playground for mischievous lemurs and chameleons. There are national parks and private reserves, perfect for nature enthusiasts wanting to explore the real depth of the island’s bird life and wildlife. The northwest coast offers some of the region’s finest beaches, with spectacular coral reefs and wonderful water-sports for those wanting some action on their holiday to Madagascar.
Inland, the roads twist through mountains and across rivers revealing small villages where a thousand years of sacred rites are still intricately entwined into the daily life of the people who are descended from Arab, African and Indian tribes. The island has a rich culture and colourful history and the people are renowned for their friendliness and their easygoing attitudes. It is a wonderful destination for family holidays, honeymoons or just for a 'once in a lifetime' experience. Go soon, whilst this magical island remains off the beaten track.
