Separated from the African coastline over 130 million years ago, Madagascar has created a private wildlife sanctuary that has developed in complete isolation from the outside world with a variety of flora and fauna so great that it is known as the eighth continent. This diversity and size means it is important you pick your regions well and Steppes Travels own experience of offering tours here for over 10 years puts us in the best position to help you get the most from this fascinating country.
With stunning beaches and pristine coral reefs, including the beautiful Nosy be and spectacular Anjajavy, it is perfect for honeymooners (and divers) who want to get away from it all. The lush rainforests in the East include Andasibe, where you can hear the haunting cry of the Indri and spot dwarf lemurs and Ranomafana, with its lush waterfalls and rivers. The Berenty Reserve in the south is famous for its ring tailed lemurs and is a favourite for photographers along with the canyons of Isalo. There is also the stark limestone pinnacles of Tsingy, the incredible nocturnal wildlife of Kirindy (home to the cat-like fosa) and the iconic Avenue of Baobabs in the West. Of course Lemurs and chameleons play a starring role in nearly all of the parks...
The culture here is equally as engaging, as you will pass small villages where ancient rites and traditions are still intricately entwined into the daily life of the people who are descended from Arab, African and Indian tribes. The island has a rich culture and colourful history and the people are renowned for their friendliness and their easygoing attitudes. With plenty of luxury properties now available, we urge you to go soon, whilst this magical island remains off the beaten track.
