Joy's Camp

Joy's Camp Views Joy's Camp view

An elegant oasis in the arid lands of Samburu National Park, Joy's Camp is built on the site of Joy Adamson's tented home in Shaba National Reserve. The site was also home to Penny the leopard, the heroine of her last book. The camp looks out over a huge natural spring where elephant and lion crowd for watering rights with herds of buffalo and the unusual desert species of Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffe and Grevy's Zebra.

The ten elegant canvas bedrooms are set on raised platforms offering incredible views of the neighboring hills. Each of the spacious tents at Joy's Camp are uniquely decorated with Boran and Somali cloth design, handmade glass and the vivacious fabrics of the local nomadic tribes creating a sophisticated and stylish camp. Each tent has its own private deck, ideal for private game viewing as well as relaxing, reading and soaking up the truly wild environs offered by Shaba. The main facilities at the camp include a small dining area serving traditional Northern Italian inspired food which is all prepared from the Cheli family cook book.

Shaba National Reserve is enriched with extraordinary wildlife and makes it the perfect place for further exploration by game drives which incorporate varied wildlife including gravy zebra, the Somali ostrich, generuk, reticulated giraffe, lesser kudu, leopards, plenty of lion and herds of elephants. Other activities include bush breakfasts, sundowners and cultural visits.
