Tour Summary
Our journey will take us to the northern highlands where the heritage of the Ethiopian Orthodox church is a major highlight, and we also have a chance to see the unique Moslem city of Harrar. We visit no fewer than five UNESCO World Heritage sites set in unsurpassed scenery and experience at first-hand how so many aspects of the past have influenced the rich cultures of Ethiopia today.

Starting with the impressive collections of the museums of the capital, Addis Ababa, you will venture first to Harrar, fourth holy city of Islam with its atmospheric streets before heading out to view the wildlife of Awash National Park. Travelling north you reach Axum, once seat of an Empire that lasted over seven centuries and extended over the Red Sea into Arabia, then experience the spectacular landscapes of the Simien Mountains, considered by many as the best scenery in Africa. On to the castles of Gondar, Lake Tana – source of the Blue Nile – and the wonderful rock-hewn churches at Lalibela, a veritable feast for the senses in this captivating landlocked nation that offers so much of the unexpected and affords a warm African welcome.
