Mashatu Game Reserve

Botswana, Mashatu Game Drive (Rattray Reserves)
  • Two options of camps within the reserve
  • Family friendly with many activities to enjoy
  • Easily accessed from Madikwe and South Africa

Mashatu Game Reserve is located in the Northern Tuli Game Reserve of Botswana, near where the Limpopo River forms the border with South Africa. The Main Camp is placed among undulating plains of wilderness. Burning torches welcome guests into the friendly lounge with its deep and comfy couches and chic safari style décor. The Gin-Trap bar is a social meeting point and sumptuous meals of traditional home-cooked African cuisine are served in the thatch covered dining area or around the roaring camp fire in the open boma.

Mashatu Main Camp - The14 luxury suites are privately scattered along the camp’s perimeter. These thatched units are all air-conditioned and have cool slate or screeded floors and wood-panelled ceilings. The decor is ethnic with tasteful earth tones complimented by impressive black and white prints of Africa’s most beautiful animals.

The rooms are spacious, with seating areas which offer a further day bed, allowing these suites to comfortably accommodate families with younger children. The en-suite bathrooms boast double vanities, large baths and separate showers. Wide sliding doors open out to elevated verandas with views over the waterhole.

Mashatu Tented Camp - is situated just 15 minutes from Main Camp and has eight twin bedded mounted tents which aim to create a true African sanctuary while blending harmoniously with the surrounding savannah. Each of the tents are hidden in the branches of the huge trees and have open en suite shower, flush toilet and hot and cold running water, a simple luxury in the African wilderness.

Facilities within the camp itself include a plunge pool, dining terrace and the opportunity to sample a Boma dinner under the stars - a true African experience. The lodge is in close proximity to a local game watering hole, allowing the opportunity to get close to nature.

Activities at both camps include morning and evening game drives as well as guides walks, mountain bike rides or horseback rides, all lead by highly qualified rangers. You can also go on interesting cultural tours or spend some time in the fascinating Discovery Room, which presents animal specimens and relics of species which roamed this region long before man.

At Steppes travel we have been visiting Mashatu for years and the camps never fail to impress; the game is great and the hospitality legendary. A wonderful family destination.
