West of the capital Tegucigalpa, lies a picturesque region of towns and villages, set in delightful surroundings of hills and woods. The local villages, whose descendants are influenced by the colonist and Lenca Indian, all display a selection of well-made and high quality handicrafts. The town of Copan Ruinas is noteworthy not only for its cobblestone streets and numerous hiking trails, but also for Honduras's premier Mayan archaeological site, Copan, which was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.
