Until the late 19th century, few foreigners had penetrated beyond the capital cities and, while nations and languages have flowered and withered, China has spent the last two thousand years evolving in isolation.

This series of six programmes by the makers of Planet Earth starts on Sunday 11 May at 8.05pm, documenting China's incredible wealth of natural scenery and wildlife.
Given that China is the third largest country in the world (it is about the same size as the whole of Europe) it is high time that the spotlight turned from the Olympics, pollution and the contradictions of their political system to showcase the variety of this extraordinary country.

Where To Go

China holidays offer either the first-time visitor or experienced Sinophile a realm of possibilities. Apart from the legendary sites such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City in Beijing and the Terracotta Warriors at Xian, there are many other options open to the intrepid traveller.



Explore Yunnan Province with its multitude of flowers and Buddhist religion which, unlike in Tibet, has been allowed to grow and flourish.




Alternatively cruise the Yangtse, in one of the new ships and glimpse the gorge before it disappears for ever.




For the more adventurous, there is always the opportunity of following the ancient Silk Road west, skirting the formidable Taklamakan Desert to explore the ancient Buddhist caves at Dunhuang and ending at the Sunday market in Kashgar. If time allows on your China holidays, continue across the Tien Shan Mountains into Central Asia or turn south and cross the Karakorum into Pakistan.

When To Go

Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November).

Being the largest country in the world, the climate in China varies widely. However, spring and autumn are generally the best months in which to travel, with mild temperatures.
