The Chianti wine region at the heart of Tuscany is reputedly one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe. Not only is the hilly scenery a spectacular sight, but its history is equally rich. The Castellare di Ugnana, perched high on the side of a hill with open views of the valley below, was once an outpost on the road connecting the Etruscan towns of Volterra and Fiesole. It was later transformed into a medieval castle and has now been restored and expanded, whilst making a name for itself in the sphere of olive oil production, for which the region is renowned worldwide.

Nearby Greve, with its pretty square filled with shops selling local handicrafts, fine wines and cheeses, is now a busy country town. There are many other famous Tuscan sights within short distances, including the Renaissance town of Sienna. The villa itself is tastefully decorated whilst maintaining a rustic feel. Exquisite Italian meals are prepared with produce from the gardens and can be served in the vast upstairs dining room. Alternatively, relaxed lunches can be enjoyed from the grand terrace whilst soaking up the views that
Ugnana's position was originally chosen for.
