The Akademik Ioffe was built in Finland for the Russian Academy of Science in 1989 and was designed to be exceptionally stable, manoeuvrable, fast, quiet and functional. It is not luxurious.
Inside there is little, if any, ambient engine noise or vibration. The ship has a sophisticated stabilisation and trimming system built into its ice-strengthened hulls, giving a relatively smooth motion in rougher seas. With staff coming mainly from Canada, Australia and the USA, the atmosphere on-board is relaxed and informal. The cabins for 96 passengers vary in facilities and size but all have ample space for equipment and storage.
