Join a small sailing boat for the adventure of a life time. The Great Bear Rainforest is one of Canada’s most precious regions, and is one of the last great wildernesses.
This cruise will take you deep into the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest, home to the native First Nations for over 10,000 years. As the name suggests, due to the plentiful salmon runs and lack of human development, this region is also home to a significant number of black and grizzly bears and the rare Kermode bear. The Kermode is also known as the Spirit Bear due to its snow-white fur as a result of a recessive gene in the black bear. Just 10% of black bears in this area are white so be prepared, a lot of luck and perseverance is needed to see them.
Aboard one of the small expedition yachts, Island Odyssey, Island Roamer or the SV Bluewater, navigate where no larger boats can go. Follow the Inside Passage along Canada’s Pacific Coast and voyage into remote estuaries to view grizzlies feasting on spawning salmon. Navigate Campania Sound – an ideal area for spotting humpback whales and Steller sea lions and launch a kayak to paddle about and absorb the immensity and peacefulness of this extraordinary part of the world.
Daily plans have to remain flexible due to tides and weather, but the amazing wealth of opportunities means every day will have a different encounter, and every day will surprise.
Itinerary schedules will vary dependent on departure date and sailing vessel so please ask for further information.

Fiordland ConservancyThe Fiordland Conservancy is a vast marine park, encompassing Kynoch and Mussel Inlets, their estuaries and the surrounding mountainous landscape. It is well known for its impressive scenery with one of the finest examples of glacially carved fiords on the British Colombia coastline, with impressive waterfalls and dense forestation surrounding the river estuaries. The Conservancy is located within the Kitasoo/ Xai'xais First Nation territory and co-managed between this nation and the Province of British Columbia to preserve this unspoiled wilderness. Over the next two days spend time exploring the waters using the sea kayaks onboard . During the daily shore excursions the naturalist guide will help to identify the different coastal plants, animals and birds, as well as the marine life.
Continue exploring the estuaries and local communities of the fiordland conservancy.
Princess Royal IslandThe next couple of days will be spent exploring the shore of Princess Royal Island both by daily excursions and sea-kayak. This area is best known for seeing the rare Spirit or Kermode Bear. These bears are infact black bears with a recessive gene that result in about ten percent of the population in this area being born with white fur. Visit the creeks and estuaries, view bears on the shoreline and travel up the Khutze Inlet which is a beautiful river valley with an abundance of birdlife. Protecting a scenic fijord, the entire watershed of the Khutze River, scenic mountains and coastal old-growth forests make it ideal as a Grizzly bear and Spirit Bear habitat with salmon spawning streams and thick Sitka spruce forests.Spend time with the local Gitga'at First Nation guides who will take you to favourite wildlfe viewing areas, offering the best chance of seeing the elusive Spirit Bear.
Explore the creeks and shoreline of Princess Royal Island in search of the Spirit bear.
Whale ChannelOver the next few days explore the Whale and Principe Channels in the hope of seeing humpback whales. These incredible creatures grow up to 15 metres long, and time will be taken to observe them when the opportunity arises. The good winds that usually occur in the Principe Channel means an opportunity to set the sails and head East to Douglas Channel to explore the estuaries and interidal ares. Pass Jesse Falls, a 10 metre high waterfall spilling over from Jess Lake.
Search for humpback whales and explore by sea kayak.
