Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, in south-western Uganda, is characterised by thick tropical rainforest, often shrouded in mist, and provides a perfect habitat for the last remaining great Mountain Gorillas. Over half the world's population of mountain gorillas live in Bwindi and three families - Mubare, Habinyanja and Rushegura - have been habituated to human presence. Sitting with the gorillas for this moment of magic remains a highlight of everyone's travels.
Looking deep into the expressive brown eyes of these gentle giants is one of the most exciting and poignant wildlife encounters that Africa has to offer - but do not let it distract from Bwindi's broader biodiversity. The national park has 90 mammal species, including 11 primates, of which the black-and-white colobus, with its lovely flowing white tail, is prominent. The forest birding ranks with the best in Uganda, with 23 highly localised Albertine Rift endemics present.
Buhoma Lodge commands spectacular and uninterrupted views of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park home to the rare and elusive Mountain Gorilla.
With the best views in Bwindi, this camp overlooks the primeval Bwindi Forest with monkeys, gorillas, chimpanzees and birds screeching near the stream below.
The newest and most upmarket of the camps at Bwindi - it is situated on a hillside with views towards the forest where the mountain gorillas reside.
