Why we like Borneo

Charles Darwin called Borneo “one great wild untidy luxuriant hothouse made by nature for herself” and Borneo’s great attribute is that today that statement still holds true. Each year there are new discoveries of plants and wildlife, the interior is dense jungle and there are vast areas where few, if any, humans have trod. It is wild and exciting and remains the preserve of the true traveller.

What to expect on your Borneo holiday

Borneo is the largest island in the world divided into a number of countries. Sabah and Sarawak, which belong to Malaysia, plus the Sultanate of Brunei, are in the north, with the remaining 73% belonging to Indonesia. While there are some beautiful islands, beaches and really excellent diving to be had on the coast, the focus of any holiday tends to be on the incredible diversity of wildlife, remote and sometimes barely accessible regions, river trips, the huge caves of Mulu Park and the indigenous tribal population. Accommodation varies greatly and, once inland, hotels and lodges tend to have great character and atmosphere but can be quite simple, however once you are back on the coast proper luxury is again available. Dense jungle has dictated that rivers form the traditional line of communication and we always try and incorporate a river journey into an itinerary.

Some ideas for a Borneo holiday

  • Explore the colonial city of Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, and once the home to Rajah Brookes.
  • Experience world-class diving on the tropical islands of Lankayan and Sipadan.
  • Spot proboscis monkeys from a boat safari on the Kinabatangan River.
  • For the fit, but novice mountaineer, climb Mount Kinabalu (4,093m) and watch sunrise from the summit.
  • A night safari in Danum Valley.
  • Spend time with Asia's only great ape, the iconic orang-utan.

Our Borneo expertise

Charlie and Clare have a wealth of travel experience and a particular passion for South East Asia. Both have recently returned from trips to both Malaysian and Indonesian Borneo which has only served to enhance their love for this part of the world.

If spending some time with orang-utans is your prime objective then we definitely have the right expertise not least because of our very close relationship with the Orang-utan Foundation.
