Inquisitive Gray Whale calf © Rita Daubeney

As we enter the month of February and there seems to be no reprieve from the miserable English winter the mind seems to wonder to thoughts of holiday plans. What if I told you that this time next year you could not only be leaving the frosty bite of the English winter behind, but that you could be within touching distance of whales, surrounded by beautiful stark deserts and crystal clear waters?

Well, February is one of the ideal months to visit the famous friendly gray whales of Baja California, set off the coast of Mexico. A trip that has recently been voted one of the ultimate wildlife experiences in Mark Carwardine’s latest book of the same name and discussed in a great article in the Sunday Telegraph this weekend.

There are a number of options available when it comes to choosing your boat, but we would always advise you to go small and knowledgeable! Having travelled to Baja California last year, I have firsthand experience of most of the boats we offer and can help to match you with your ideal boat. All of the voyage and boat options we offer provide fantastic and intimate wildlife experiences with specialist guides to help spot wildlife, provide relevant information to enhance your understanding of what you are seeing and to answer any questions you may have.

Wildlife encounters can include Sperm, Pilot and even Blue whales, common dolphins, sharks, rays, sea lions and sea turtles, Heermans Gulls, Elegant Terns, Peregrine Falcons, Ospreys and many more! All this as well as the chance to come eye to eye with the famous, friendly gray whales, who will interact with you and your boats, playing and nudging the boats for hours.

The experience can be easily be combined with an extension to main land Mexico, or visit in February for the chance to watch the staggering butterfly migration, where Monarch butterflies amass in such numbers their collective weight has been known to break tree branches.

We now have 2013 dates available, as we use small boats for the most intimate wildlife encounters places do book up quickly. Baja is a land of contrasts and offers something for everyone, please do call me, Sue on 01285 880 981 to discuss your Whale watching cruise to Baja California.
