Talking of which, nearer to home, my ears pricked up when I heard the name Ragley Hall as my Mother-in-law has mentioned it many times as a place she played as a child. It was her Grandmothers home from the age of 13 where she was employed as a ‘Tweenie’ – scullery maid. Maria Smart came from a little village the other side of Stratford-upon-Avon and spent the rest of her life at Ragley Hall, looking after the family home of the Marquess and Marchioness of Hertford and working her way up to be housekeeper. She married a handyman who also worked on the estate and they brought up their 3 children there, one of whom was my Mother-in-law’s Father. Maria Smart died at 84 in her Grace and Favour cottage on the estate.
