I had stepped into another world. Or that is what it felt like as I was dazzled by the brightness of the sublime icy landscape which surrounded me. Even the sky, of the most intense blue, and the brilliance of the water had a surreal other-worldly feel about them.

Everyone associates Antarctica with stereotypical images of ice and cold, of endearing and comical penguins but for me it was the vividness of the colours, of the light that really struck me.
I was also overwhelmed by the immense feeling of space. I loved the wildness of Antarctica, the great feeling of freedom - no news, no TV and no worries. It was thought provoking and belittling. I was enraptured.

Antarctica is the most beautiful place I have been in my life. I look forward to going back there.

How to get there: the ships to Antarctica depart Ushuaia in Argentina, the southern most town in the world. You fly from UK to Buenos Aires in Argentina then to Ushuaia. The international flight takes 15 hours and the internal flight takes 3 hours and 30 minutes.
