In contrast to the flat plains of the Llanos, southern Venezuela is dominated by majestic table-topped mountains known as tepuis, which rise abruptly above the beautiful grasslands and forests of the Gran Sabana. One formidable tepui is Mount Roraima, whose top is believed to be the "Lost World" immortalised by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The huge area of Canaima National Park is also home to the world's highest waterfall, Angel Falls. The water cascades over 950m down the rusty-red rock face of Auyan Tepui (Hell Mountain) into the mist below. This dramatic landscape is suitable for the wildlife enthusiast and adventurous traveller alike.
