Our travel expert, Charlotte has recently returned from the Andaman Islands. Read her account of her trip in
On Location.
Lush tropical rainforest, coral reef, mangroves, white sandy beaches and an exotic collection of flora and fauna make Andaman & Nicobar a favourite for nature lovers and those wanting to completely cut themselves off from the rest of the world in a virgin paradise.
These remote islands that sustain the unwritten rule that the best places to stay are the hardest to reach are a short flight from the Indian mainland to Port Blair, followed by a 2 hour boat ride. Our favourite island is Havelock Island, floating 55 km northeast of Port Blair, where guests can stay and experience the secret paradise of the Andamans.
With a limited number of decent places to stay, our favourite retreat, hidden in the serene confines of this beautiful island is "Barefoot at Havelock". This an excellent eco friendly retreat in lush green tropical rainforests, right next to one of the most beautiful beaches of the world. Spread over seven acres of organic landscape the resort is based on the philosophy of sustainable and socially responsible tourism.
There are 18 well constructed cottages and villas, each constructed with eco friendly materials like wood and thatch. We recommend the Andaman Villas. The accommodation is comfortable however is pretty minimalist and guests should be aware that with no Television, newspapers, internet and sometimes intermittent phone reception, you are pretty cut off from the rest of the world - a god send some might say!
The main menu at Barefoot at Havelock is listed with fixed continental and Indian specialties prepared and cooked out of organically grown ingredients and fresh sea foods. Angling enthusiasts can also have the opportunity to bring in and dine with their fresh catch of the day.
While staying here guests are encouraged to talk to the staff about the many exciting outdoor activities that are on offer like snorkelling, diving, fishing, kayaking, trekking, elephant rides and more. The island vibe makes for a very relaxed staff so you need to be proactive in arranging these activities. A fantastic way to begin your day is with a rejuvenating yoga class in an open air pavilion on the high hills. Take an escorted nature walk through the dense rainforests sighting various colourful birds and insects, including many other spectacular wild inhabitants of the area, or go discover the fascinating world of coral reefs.
A visit to the Andaman and Nicobar can be combined with any tour of India either at the beginning or the end of your trip.
